The draft you describe, woven in a density that allows for it will produce a textile that is ‘balanced’ – as in the same amount of warp and weft will be seen on each side of the cloth.

A warp faced cloth will show ONLY the warp on one side of the cloth, such as satin. This is a combination of weave structure and density. The other side of a satin cloth will be weft faced (sometimes referred to as sateen). The measure of a ‘perfect’ satin/sateen is that only the one element will be seen – no trace of the other should be seen.

A warp faced fabric will show only the warp on both sides of the cloth. A weft faced fabric will show only weft on both sides of the fabric (tapestry etc.) (Rep weaves may show glimpses of weft at block changes but generally the appearance of the cloth is warp on both sides).

The draft as given is a *balanced* twill, which is the ‘ideal’ that most people strive for. Sometimes I will adjust the epi to increase the density slightly making the cloth warp *emphasis* and at times I will adjust the twill angle to be steeper (or lower) than the ‘ideal’ finished angle of 45 degrees.

        HI, Charlene.

        Yes, Laura’s explanation is “brilliant”.

          Hi Bobbi,

I love your color arrangement in the draft.

      Laura,

I realized my mistake in calling it warp/weft faced instead of “dominant” while I was doing some chores today.

Yes, I am intending this piece to be a balanced weave scarf. Your description is brilliant and hopefully it will stick in my brain this time. If not, well, there’s the next part of Handweaving Academy focusing on twill to look forward to.

I got confused thinking this was the same draft I wove last year in Gorgeous Gradients where the back side was different from the front when woven. As soon as I went back to my notebooks, I realized that the earlier scarf is a 3/1 twill tie up.

      Thanks for the help.

      Bobbi

I do like the way you’ve used color in the draft!
