Turned Twill
Posted by Katy Ginn on April 24, 2023 at 1:41 pmTypically I see a 1/3 twill tie up used for turned twill. Can I also use 2/2? If so, what problems may I encounter? Thanks for your thoughts.

Not sure what you mean by ‘turned’ twill. Usually that means using two blocks of twill, one 1:3 the other 3:1 on 8 shafts.
You can do stripes weft wise on four shafts by using a direct tie up then use two feet to do the 3 up 1 down (on a jack loom).
If you mean changing the twill line direction, that can be done using 2:2 twill.

If you want blocks of different colors (one warp dominant, one weft dominant), you will need to use a 3-1 or 1-3 tie-up. If you use a 2-2 tie-up, you’ll see the same colors in all blocks (neither warp or weft dominated). If you just want to change the twill angle, you could use a 2-2 tie-up.

Chiming in here to agree with @laura-fry and @sheila-roberts and to add: you don’t have to use a 1/3 (or 2/2) *straight* twill, nor do you have to use the same twill in each block.
Here are 1/2 turned twill on 6S; a 1/2 and 1/3 turned twill on 7S (both straight), and a bunch of different 1/3 twills on 8S – straight, point, broken of various lengths.
