Peer Support sessions: Weaving, and Design
Posted by Kathy on April 4, 2023 at 11:36 amHere is the spot to drop any links, information, etc. that comes out of the Peer Support sessions.
The aim of this thread is for it to be the place to look when you think “Oh, we talked about that in Peer Support”, as well as a place for members that are unable to attend to see what topics we cover.
Share away weaving friends!

In the last peer session, we talked about how to carry a color up the side without getting terribly lumpy selvages, when doing plain weave. The tip that a few people suggested was: “When carrying a weft yarn up the side, treat the carried thread like the last warp thread”. In other words, if the ‘active’ weft came out over the last warp thread, then it should wrap ‘over’ the weft thread being carried up the side. I wanted to post this, because it has really helped me get better selvages while carrying up the side. Thanks Peer Support Guild!!

I like this as a thread. Sometimes you can get overwhelmed with all the help and advice. Here would be good to consolidate on ideas and subject talked about in Peer Support.

I like this thread as well. I can’t always attend the sessions and it would be great to check here for any interesting topics that were discussed. Thanks Kathy!

You are most welcome but I can’t take the credit, this thread was a suggestion that came up in a Peer Support!

This week a lot of people decided we’d like Janet to do a “check it out” session for Fibreworks. She showed us a pretty nifty set of tricks (that I missed some of and will have to listen to the session again).
Last time I learned about folding warps. You halve the number of ends for warping but add extra length so you can fold the chain over and thread it up that way. You need a cross at the beginning and end of the chain. How interesting! I’d never heard of that before.
Always learning something new in these sessions.

I never heard of a folded warp either. I tried in for my WAL scarf and it worked like a dream! I’ll definitely be using this technique as often as I can.

Oooh! Thanks Barb. I’ll have to try it myself now.????

There was a lively discussion about how to deal with fabrics that end up with wrinkles after wet finishing. Some members noted that after their fabric was done (cotton was the fibre in the culprit item) that there were ore or less permanent press wrinkles.
Discussion ensued, including methods of wet finishing, detergents, and even washing machine styles. Several people noted that they might pursue some experimentation to see if they could narrow down the cause, hopefully they will share their findings!

We talked about finishing placemats and lots of weavers prefer hand sewing to letting the sewing machine stitches show.
Weaving changes since learning on peer to peer? I can bring up anything and get options from everyone’s experience. We had quite a talk on the first washing after weaving, a d talked about the variables which lead to an increase or decrease in wrinkles. We concluded that twill weaves, being slightly thicker, wrinkle less but are going to experiment with washing techniques, mercerized vs unmercerized, to reduce wrinkles.
