I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. I have mystery yarn that I believe is 3 ply wool. I love the color and it is great for our low value study! I am looking to design a project to weave fabric for pillows from this yarn. I want to combine it with some other yarn to maybe use an overshot pattern. So the second yarn would be thinner.

My first question is: Does anyone recognize this type of yarn?

My next question is: Do you have suggestions on good weaves to use this yarn for pillow fabric?

My last question is: What would you use along with this to create an overshot design? For example I have some Harrisville 2 ply variegated yarn (third picture) that might work???

    Thanks so much!

You can try a burn test. For wool, it will burn slowly in the flame, and *usually* self extinguish when removed from the flame, leaving a brittle bead as residue.

Oh my goodness! A response from one of my idols! I will try the burn test. I could not remember what to look for.

      Many thanks!!!

I can’t answer your questions but I like that blue/gray yarn. I just finished weaving with Harrisville Shetland, in my warp and weft, I am not sure how I like it. I had several broken threads before I even started and once I got started and onto the second half of my scarf, it started breaking threads again. And what I used for weft broke really easily too. It was newly purchased so being old was not the issue.

That is really interesting. I have used the Shetland a lot with double weave blankets to double the width on a narrow loom. I did not have a problem with breakage at all. I also loved the way the blankets fulled up a little after wet finishing. My yarn is old! I got it as a donation from a weaver at the end of their weaving career…so I really don’t know how old it is! There are two colors…twisted together to give it a variegated look. Maybe those two threads are a little different.

As much as I love my Harrisville loom and the service I get, I will not purchase yarn from them again. I did have some that was old and tossed it because even by putting several strands together I could break it with just an easy tug. It was just disappointing for my first weave with wool.
