Let us know: What topics would you like to see covered in the Academy?

As I read through this vibrant discussion, I think we are going to keep Tien and Janet busy for years to come!!!
-
Heh! Yes, but that’s the fun!
Seriously, we are interested in what EVERYONE would like to see, so if you haven’t chimed in yet, please do!
And we are planning to add some rigid heddle classes, so please let us know what kind of content you’d like to see for RH weaving, too!
-
Would love to achieve a beautiful iridescense on the rigid heddle.
Would love a class on how rigid heddle weavers can use handweaving.net to download patterns that can be used on the rigid heddle. (some only requiring a single heddle plus pick up sticks and some 2 heddle) THEN how to effectively use the color editor to design for color.
-
I would also love what you have suggested for Rigid Heddle weavers, Cass. I don’t think I’m using my rigid heddle loom to its fullest potential.
-
Charlene, so many of us don’t but stick with Tien and Janet for understanding color and how to use it on the rigid heddle. Carly Jayne is also fabulous at using her rigid heddle to the max and she is working on rigid heddle classes in the academy, I am excited at what we will be learning!

Yes, many samples and some were even successful in achieving iridescence,
-
Sandra, do you mind posting some pictures? I would love to see them! Did you do it with one or more heddles?

I think more on drafts and structures, especially block weaving .
-
YES!! “Everyone” talks about Block weave structures. But no one will tell me what they are. I’ve gathered that you use these two harnesses for this block and those two for the other one. And sometimes you switch them up for a third and fourth. But, What in the world ?? and why?

These suggestions are fantastic. One quick thought is that I am intimidated by Fiberworks and would love to learn tips and suggestions for what is special about the program. I would also appreciate tips on working with various fibers besides cotton and wool. I look forward to all the future classes.

I’ve not see any mention of band weaving so far so I am not sure if there is enough interest in that. I really enjoy tablet weaving on my Inkle loom and there is so much to explore with adding letters to bands and brocade weaving for example, as well as other forms of band weaving that don’t use tablets.

I may have overlooked the teaching in the Academy, but I have S.A. Zielinski Encyclopaedia of Hand-Weaving, and would like to understand how to read the Colonial short drafts. The book does describe short drafts, but I don’t understand the concept.
Thank you!

Thank you for asking for our interests. It must be a challenge to meet the needs of such a diverse group of weavers. I find no matter my level of interest or experience, I have learned something from every course offered. It’s actually a challenge to try to stay focused with so many interesting topics and new areas to dive into! I would enjoy any of the suggested topics mentioned so far, but would especially like to have a deeper understanding of using 8 shafts with different weave structures.
-
I’m interested in blocks, honeycomb, and Finnweave (or a similar technique for picking up patterns as you go).
-
I am sure this is totally not practical but……if a course on a simple dye method and participants use the same colors and dye to create a dyed warp then a class on how to effectively create a weaving that would accentuate this yarn with picking the correct weft….possible weaving structures etc. I think I could be creating more dynamic pieces if I knew the ins and outs.
-
Love this idea, Cass! I’ll think about how we might be able to do it – online dye classes can be a bit of a challenge, but it would be fun!

I would love to have some terrific resources such as a great book step by step dyeing etc. They could be floor loom and rigid heddle. Eventually all members could add to this.

In yesterdays Tien and Janet Q and A session (June 21, 2023): the topic of live tensioning came up?… Janet replied with information that this topic has been discussed in the Webinars so I can search that for more information. I also found a blog post by Tien on the topic from 2019…
https://tienchiu.com/2009/05/live-weight-warp-tensioning-system/
I would like to learn more about this topic. It sounds very helpful! Thanks!

I would like to know about the structure of Deflected Double weave.
-
Crackle weave, Supplemental Warping, give me more of anything. More More, give me more.
-
I know this one will be out in left field BUT…I just got a Charkha and have started spinning cotton. So, something about using rather thin and irregular handspun would be great :)
-
I love parallel threading. Perhaps it could be taught at some point (I know it is a advanced technique)
