FINALLY PROJECT FINISHED
I have been awol for much of 2023 and part of that was because I was using the Twill class as my launch for making a tallit for my son. His own sons are scheduled for their Bar Mitzvot a year from now and he mentioned he would like to have a new one of his own that I might weave. I set out to research to make sure I followed all important traditions as well as to fulfill my son’s requirements. He loves texture but prefers a very neutral palette. It was finished in time to give him for Chanukah and fortunately, he was thrilled. Nothing feels better than to make something that another will cherish. I am showing some of the work in process and finished. Now I look forward to taking some more courses and jumping back to my usual wilder color play.
Cotton and cotton-silk blends and handspun tussah silk. The basic broken twill design and basic colors used. I did the stripe placements using the color Chart organizer recording each color used A to N with an exact count as I wove so that the one end could be replicated precisely in reverse. The design was lightly sketched on graph paper as an outline to be referred to and I used Handwoven.net to make a design and play with colored stripe balance. Then I designed on the loom as I went. I used my Gilmore 8-harness loom and its sectional beam but I wound each section on a warp board. I decided that a simple broken twill would give the impression of texture and most of the yarns were 8/2 cotton or the equivalent which I set at 20 epi to give plenty of room for fulling in a hot wash after it was woven and the fringe twisted. I had to correct a threading error and was afraid that the spacing would make an enormous track but it vanished in the fulling. Some of the yarns were #5 Pearl cottons which also added depth and texture. I learned a lot and had a great deal of enjoyment from this project. One of the things I learned once again about myself is that I absolutely have to add more variations of color to anything I weave.
