Echo help.
Posted by Sandra Lincoln on September 22, 2023 at 5:52 pmSo Janet and Tien suggested I post here in the forum, to see if anyone had done an Echo weave. This draft is Mariam Stubenberisky’s Page 204 Echo and Iris. HW #74119 My colors are Brassard, 8/2 cotton, Lilas, Jaune Pale, Magenta, and Fushia. I just do not know how the colors work in Echo and Iris drafts. Has anyone else done one? Tien had some ideas about moving the colors around in the draft so that the yellow did not blend in making orange. Janet thought there was a different tie-up that may be, ?? Maybe something changed when I copied and pasted at some point, there are mistakes in the draft, and if anyone sees one tell me so I can fix it. I wouldn’t know if it’s right or wrong. I am not to worried about that stuff I just need to sort out the colors and understand how they work. So I think this is everything I sent to Janet and Tien last week. I could not attach the draft but the number on handweaving.net is in the post if you want to play. The yellow is there only as an accent it’s the other colors that my daughter-in-law loves. Thanks I am looking for an explanation of echo, and how it works and maybe some color help. Or, I can do something totally different this is about the 4th draft I have played with. Gradients may be the way to go.

Do you have Stubenitsky’s book? On pages 38 and 39 she talks about color choices. 3 analogous colors and their compliment should work, arrange them according to the color wheel, 2 colors with strong contrast, at least one high value and one low value.

Also, finer yarns work a lot better than heavy yarns (because of the optical mixing).

Thanks, Sheila, I will check it out. I have to sit down with her books when there is nothing else for me to do. The hard part about this project is the colors and the size of the yarn. Its a shawl for my daughter-in-law who has had cancer. She has never asked me for anything, and she loved the colors of my towels of all things and wanted a shawl made from those colors, well as towels they are great. Brassard has those colors in 8/2 but not all of them in the 10/2 or 20/2 and finding those yarns are easier said than done. So at this point, I think I am going to try a gradient again. I could do wide strips, length-wise, and narrow widthwise or vs. a plaid, but I am afraid she will look like a towel . The colors are very bold, and I am trying to tame them. I am going to give her some towels too, but they are done already. Thanks, I will sit with my book on my day off. I need a day off my feet. Last week I worked 16 hrs hardly worth the drive, this week I have 40. GGGRRR

Have you looked at the color palette for Lunatic Fringe 20/2? They have some colors fairly close, and the sheen makes everything look much fancier. I love Echo weaves, I think many people want the rainbow effect of the color blending and added iridescence, but I feel like I’ve seen them in analogous color ways (like your purple-fuschia palate) and they look great.

Thanks, Carly Jayne, Lunitic has changed some of their yarn and color recently. But I have decided not to do the echo with this project. I do have one I will be doing after the holidays, or during, but those colors and yarn are dyed and waiting for my Daughter in law shawl to be done. I am going to do it in the same style I did my own, except with her colors. I should be able to use enough of her colors to make her happy, It will be bright pink. lol, I am not a pink person. I will use the all colors she wanted in gradient strips the long way of the shawl and have not decided if I will use gradient strips across or make wider strips of solid color. Thanks again. Is there a way to shut off comments so no one will waste there time with this ?

Hi Sandy–I did a few echo drafts when the book came out and (for some reason) have just returned to them this month. Remembering how some of the previous color choices worked really well and some were more blah, I did lots of experimenting on Fiberworks this time. I was amazed how much difference the order of the colors made (as Tien suggested), and it was shocking how much the weft can change things. But it looks like you have weaving software, so you can experiment. What don’t you like about the draft as it is? I’ll send another reply with photos next time I get to my computer.

Here is my warp: 8/2 tencel fushia, gold, rust, and purple. The 2 drafts show how much difference a change in order of warp threads makes.

I should also say that I think that these echo drafts of Marian’s seem perfect for scarfs or shawls. You get to incorporate lots of colors in a beautiful way! I recommend that you use tencel (or silk) as a weft to enhance the drape.

The hardest part of this entire project is the colors. She has her heart set on the colors in the picture. I tried to find the colors in another fiber type but could not come close to the same colors.
I made a shawl and offered it to her she loved how it felt and the size etc. but it was navy blue with other blue strips. It was a no-go she wanted the colors she liked. This shawl is very comfy, has a nice drape, and is all made from 2/8 cotton ( 8/2)
I have been working a lot this week and will be away on Saturday, for the Sheep and Wool Fest. Not working as much for the next couple of weeks so I will be working on it some more. Hope to find some inspiration at S&W, this weekend. I also need to sit down with my books and have some reading time. LOL without falling asleep.
Thank you for your insight. I will keep you posted. BTW lovely warp. I look forward to doing more of Echo, and Crackel and keep exploring this weave type.

I love the colors. If you are looking for a shawl in which the colors shine clear and pure, than echo weave is probably not the best option. For in echoweave there are no area´s of unblended colors, every thread is always between two other threads of two different colors. However, echoweave can give some lovely results. The color of the weft is really important. Three of your warp colors are in the red spectrum, and the weft is green, always a difficult combination I think. I have experimented with some colors and will post the pictures here. These are all on the same threading as you have posted, only different colors in the weft: dark blue, summersky blue, soft orange and white

Thank you. Those are actually lovely color combos. I was going to get back to it this week and work on a design. I have dug out a twill book and in hopes there is something in there that will make the colors work. I think I am done trying to make them work for the echo design. I have been through so many designs with these colors I may just do my shawl design in those colors. My design was nothing more than plan twill, with a couple gradient strips. Thank you.
