Carly! I have a question about a plain weave project.
Posted by Cass Markovich on November 28, 2023 at 5:43 pmI was so excited about Handweaving.net including 2 shaft weaves I picked out this pattern (the first picture posted), adapted it for my colors. However, you can see by my finished scarf that it does not look like this draft. I thought I followed the treading and weaving perfectly. I will add the draft it does resemble. My scarf is ok but definitely not what I wanted. Where did I go wrong with the first draft? Thanks!

I see what happened, it’s beautiful by the way.
In the draft, you have places where the warp and weft need to be doubled, so you should have threaded it with two warp ends of one color in the same slot, then 2 ends of the next color in the same eye, then the single thread with just one end in a slot/eye par.It looks like you threaded two ends of one color in a slot and an eye, then the same with the next color so you ended up with a houndstooth color and weave rather than the log cabin kind of weave. Does that make sense? Here’s a picture! I hope it works!

maybe….does this mean I should alternate….2 same color ends in a slot, 2 colored ends in an eye until I get to the yellow stripe then it is 1 color in the slot, same color in an eye until I am done with that stripe then return to 2 colors in a slot, 2 in an eye? With the weft, would I put 2 same colors in up shed, 2 same colors in down shed untilI get to the stripe then slot/eye, slot eye? I need to go back and see how you figured that out……you are amazing! This could be another course…..reading the threading and weave for 2 shaft weaving!!!! I went back and could totally see the difference in threading…….finally! I just would not have known to put 2 threads in a slot and 2 threads in an eye without your guidance!

Carly, for future……how do I know if a design has double threads and not single? Do I look at the image or is there a clue in the tie-up? Also, I do not attend the peer sessions because they generally do not apply to me. Do you think I am missing something by not attending?

Sorry to keep you waiting! You can tell if they are double because there are two filled grid squares on the warp and weft in row. On a floor loom you would thread two heddles next to each other on the same shaft, but we can’t do that so we simply put two ends in one slot or eye. I hope that makes sense.

Carly, I also have a question about this draft. The Rogue Weaver has a pattern for sale just like this, but I’m trying to get away from buying patterns! If I want to make a tea towel with this, using 8/2 cotton doubled in a 10 dent heddle – would I then use 4 ends in shaft 1 (holes) and 4 ends in shaft 2 (slots), and the yellow stripes only 2 ends in each? Or would I stick with 2 in each hole and slot, and then just 1 for the yellow?

I would start with 2 ends in each eye and slot for the doubled areas and 1 in each eye and slot for the single, but I would use the 12 epi heddle to ensure the EPI doesn’t get too low.
