Overshot
Posted by Christine Hanson on May 2, 2023 at 6:52 pmI want to make some towels in an Overshot pattern. I plan to warp the loom in 10/2 cotton and also use that for the tabby. What size yarn would be large enough for the pattern weft thread? Also, what set should I use for the 10/2 cotton?
Thanks!!

I have used 10/2 cotton for Overshot at 20 EPI and it has worked well. I suggest trying a 5/2 cotton for the pattern weft.

Christie! Thank you so much. I can’t wait to get started now. I have some great colors in 5/2 so that will be fun!!!!

Since these are towels, consider the float length in your draft’s pattern weft. If your pattern floats are longish, I would consider 8/2 cotton for your pattern weft. A lot depends on the draft, IMO. You don’t want to get the floats caught on things while using them. Have you picked your draft?

Hi Holly, I was concerned about the floats and when I went to Handweaving.net I searched for a pattern with less floats and it was tough to find. I am attaching the one that would work the best. The color of the warp is natural… that did not come through well in the pic. I am not thrilled with it…still thinking. Another idea would be to make placemats instead. Then I would not have to worry too much about the floats and I would have more pattern choices. I have lots of 8/2 so that is a good option and maybe it would work with longer floats…I would like the pattern to show up and not be too small. do you have pattern ideas?

My preferred combo for e.g. tea towels in overshot is 16/2 ground (warp and tabby) sett at 24 EPI and an 8/2 pattern weft. It makes for a light enough fabric to be good for tea towels.
For a heavier hand towel, I think the 10/2 and 5/2 combo would be great! :)

Thanks so much Janet! I understand the lighter warp size. I have a ton of natural 10/2 that I dreamed of putting on my loom and just weaving all sorts of colors of towels on. There was a suggestion of 8/2 for the pattern on a 10/2 warp. It would show more of the natural which is fine…Are their other issues with that combination? I do have some 5/2 to use as pattern, which I think would work for a thicker towel.

Nope, not at all. 8/2 on a 10/2 ground should work well too. :)

Many thanks Janet! I will try both 5/2 and 8/2 with the 10/2 warp and tabby. Someone suggested a sett of 20 epi. I am thinking it might need to be a closer sett. What would you suggest?

20 is where I’d start, too. :) That’ll work great for 5/2. You might want it a smidge closer (21? 22?) if you’re using 8/2 for pattern weft.

You are the best!! Many thanks. This is turning into a little study of overshot and sett! I appreciate your help so much.
