Michelle Belson Solves a Mystery
I went on the peers helping peers weave zoom- honestly these groups are fantastic- and we discussed what everyone does to avoid tangling and not add twist while winding the warp and chaining. I wondered if winding off a cone, the top of it, added twist, although Janet on another zoom assured that as the yarn was wound on the cone it was done in the other direction to accommodate twist added as it was wound off by us. In this zoom, up popped Michelle Belson, owner of Lunatic Fringe. She told me their cotton comes on huge cones and they wind them on smaller sized cones in the other direction, to take off the twist that would be added as we weavers wound our warps.
It was all very interesting! We also discussed what kind of shuttles people preferred, and how they maintained good selvages with how they threw their shuttles.
These peer to peer zooms, both design and weaving, are well monitored and very worthwhile. I am making new weaver friends like in a guild.
