For years I have wanted to learn how to weave iridescence on my rigid heddle. I bought Bobbi’s book but it is written for floor loom. She had an article in Little Looms on iridescence on the rigid heddle but I could’t follow it. Does anyone know of a Youtube that takes you through this process? I need visual!

I am wondering about iridescent weaves too. I don’t have. A utube link for you but I recently asked in another forum if it was about the weave structure or the colour – and the wise weavers said – colour. I wove two scarves overshot in tencel , same fibre same weave structure, different colours. One had iridescence, the other didn’t.

Thanks Marilyn! What colors gave you the iridescence? I have lots of bamboo/tencel and would love to experiment!

Marilyn, did you figure out why the one had more iridescence?

Alas, iridescence is a subject I’ve not explored extensively. Bobbi Hayward is where I go when I want info on iridescence!

Someday I will have the time to explore in more detail…

My understanding is that you can get iridescence following these general rules:

1: Shiny thread (mercerized cotton or reeled silk or Tencel or shiny linen).

2: Two distinctly different colors in the warp and weft, but with similar values. For example: Green warp and Blue weft- but are the same grey in black and white. Colors next to each on the color wheel tend to blend better overall (blue/green, orange/red, Magenta /purple…etc) but that is also a matter of taste.

3: As high of an EPI you can go: for a rigid heddle that will be 12 or 15 dent heddle unless you use two heddles for 20-30 EPI.

4: A balanced weave, you don’t want a weave that is too warp or weft-faced in plain weave.

What if you brought some yarns to a Peer Support session and everyone can try to figure out which ones might work so you can try it? I seem to remember you have a stunning yarn collection. Maybe we can have a wager to see who guessed correctly and got you the best iridescence!

Thanks Carly! Your suggestions are great! I think that is a wonderful idea to bring yarns to a peer support group!

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I confess I just discovered this thread now. Haven’t quite go the hang of navigation. From. Y few experiments i am guessing high contrast colours not close on the colour wheel and interlacing in small increments – like a twill rather than overshot. And shiny makes for better. Still experimenting.
