1. (n.) The fibrous vascular tissue of some plants that conduct sugars downward from the leaves. Bast fibers are long tubes running the length of the stem, connecting the leaves to the roots below.

2. (n.) A fiber made from this part of the plant. Linen, hemp, ramie, and nettle are all bast fibers; cotton is not.
