  • 2023 Weaving plans?

Is anyone else starting off the year by using some new methods or tools? Have any big plans for new yarns or fibres? I’m excited to be learning a new warping method. I’ve had the good fortune to find a partner who builds me tools and equipment like this new tension box and a bobbin winder. He also upgraded my warping board to make it function as a spool rack. My first ever attempt at sectional beaming was preceded by a lot of learning from blogs (thanks Laura Fry!), and videos from a variety of sources. I also found that weaving Facebook groups were a great resource to help identify problems others have had which helped me avoid some pitfalls.

I’ve wound my very fist section! It’s about 11 yards of 2/8 cotton. I’m so excited that it is fairly flat, and seems to be plenty tight. But, there are two broken ends there that I re-tied so I’ll have to deal with those as they come over the back beam. I think I’ve figured out a way to prevent that going forward.

What are you excited to try this year?

I’m exploring a new-to-me approach to twill blocks and slowly exploring the possibilities. I’m on warp number 2 and have 3 simmering in the back of my brain. I know what I want to do, just need to work out the details. :)

I guess I will be learning a floor loom with Janet in late January :) But my current goal: continue on my COE sample journey (I am trying to do all the samples on a rigid heddle, I have a few to redo because I am gotten better at weaving since my first go-looking at you, lace weaves…). I am also registered for a Krokbragd workshop with Debby Greenlaw in 2 weeks and a 2-day workshop with John Mullarkey with tablet weaving. I have seen some people combine tablets with a rigid heddle loom to make braided borders and I am fascinated by that prospect!

I want to explore more about Summer and Winter and attempt some nice wall hangings or table linens- things that are more like art pieces rather than scarves and shawls.

I try to weave and sew one garment a year, so I need to start planning that :) I bought a ton of Italian Linen/cotton blend from Gist just before they stopped carrying it so I’m thinking a simple color and weave linen/cotton tunic- maybe with some wool woven in to provide shaping at the back of the waste.

Basically, I hope this is the year I finally make the pretty things after 2 years of exploration and sampling. Now that I have developed more of the “how” I need to start focusing on the “why” because explaining to someone WHY they should get that double or triple heddle kit and spend some time learning to thread and perfect a multi-shaft twill or huck on a rigid heddle is important so people want to stick with the “how”. I can see all the possibilities in my head, but that’s not going to help anyone! So this year I want to start to put all my new skills to use and start designing.

I also want to start teaching this year. And get a wholesale account from Ashford so I can start to be an enabler… I mean seller.

I am looking forward to continuing my journey to finish teh OHS weaving certificate, and possibly achieve Master Weaver status in the future.

I have been very busy with other pursuits the last few months, and have not worked on it at all in the last 6 months. I am looking forward to getting back into the habit of learning.
