What is 8/2 yarn?
Posted by Carly Jayne on October 19, 2022 at 9:52 amHow is 8/2 yarn calculated? What about 8/4? Is it the same for cotton, linen, wool and silk?

The ‘8/2’ is an indication of size. The numerator is the grist per ply, the denominator is the number plies, and the 840 is yards per pound (YPP) there are in 1/1 cotton (also known as the “count”).
So:
8 * 840 / 2 = 3360 YPP for 8/2 cotton
8 * 840 / 4 = 1680 YPP for 8/4 cotton
The counts are different for silk and for linen. The calculations are done in a similar way, but that “magic” 840 number is different.

Thanks Janet! That was a clear response and I totally understand what you are talking about.

Thank you! I always forget what the numbers mean, and feel bad about asking…again. and again….and again.
