  • What problems can I solve for you about designing with stripes?

Hi everyone! I’m hard at work on the Stripes class. Part of the class is a section on troubleshooting common problems. I’ve got some stuff in that section already (color mixing, blah designs, designs that are too “busy”, etc.) but I’d love to answer more common questions!

(This class is for stripes with very simple woven patterns in the draft (plain weave, 4-end twills, etc.), but I’d like to hear about problems with more complex drafts as well, because that’s coming in Stripes 2.)

I just finished designing towels with stripes (warp winding in progress) and the problem I always face is doing interesting and fun stripes in the warp, but with no or very few stripes in the weft, because I usually don’t want to do a lot of color changes in the weft. (especially for a project like this one, which is sweat towels :)). So, perhaps how warp-only stripes can be jazzed up by a simple but interesting draft?

I also like stripes in the warp and not the weft. I would be interested in some interesting ways to design the stripes – something outside the square that isn’t boring like plain stripes can be at time. Pinstripes can be fun at times.

I would like to look at warp stripes of varying widths and colors–how do you get something that looks balanced and kind of random at the same time?

I have the same question as you, Sheila. I sometimes would like the stripes to be slightly asymmetric in width and/or position with respect to color and still feel balanced overall.

Thanks! I have some stuff about asymmetric balance in the class already, but I’ll add some more details.

Sometimes I see a piece designed with stripes which look very cohesive and not plaid ish. How to do that?
