Cass told of color games with yarn which she and her late mentor played to discover unique combinations. I think there are all sorts of color games, and color challenges which would be fun to sort out.

During the peer to peer discussions helping each other with color changes was such fun.

I would love to see an ongoing course where challenges are thrown out to the rest of us, which we solve or try to, with wrapping colors around cardboard. The “doing” aspect of this method might cement certain learning such as being aware of value in color, color mixing, all sorts of things.

Last spring at Vermont Weaving Supply we were handed four colors. From those four colors, we were told to come up with a draft and a project. I have made two. We were also allowed to add a color of our own choosing, to compliment the other colors. I made twill towels, for the weave along, with random treadling, and they came out awesome. When my daughter-in-law saw them she loved them and the color so I made her a shawl in the same colors. I just took it off the loom this morning. I changed one color in the shawl that is not in the towels. This was a challenge for me because, for one thing, I am not a pink person at all. I love lavender, but how was I going to make it look awesome with Pink!! And I tried to make the shawl much more interesting than it is. I really wanted the shawl to be something special so I tried and tried to come up with ideas to use the colors to no real success. Then when I came up with simple it worked.

We did something similar in a spinning group I belonged to years ago. We drew names for Christmas and for our December meeting, we had to bring our projects. We were to give the person whose name we drew 2 colors of fiber, I believe we did 4oz of each fiber and spun it into yarn, or felt it in something and gave it back to whoever gave it to you. I drew my friend Meg , and I gave her two colors of fiber I had, she made me a runner with the two colors I gave her it was lovely until just recently the housekeeper washed and dried it. Besides being much shorter it’s still nice. But all mashed up. Two examples of what can be done. I think it would be fun.

Now that was a fun game, and the results are splendid! What these games do is force us to make combinations beyond long -held “rules” and the results generally are such fun!

I was thrilled when she did that project. It forced me to step out of my comfort zone, just a little, and take on doing a project all on my own. That said her kits are also put together with other projects in mind. The last project on October 23 was a double-weave bag. The colors are wonderful and she added in ideas for doing other things. Like Rep Weave placemats. I need wedding gifts this spring, I will fill a back with placemats, consider a wrapped gift.

I love this game! I hope more people respond with similar creative experiences! The towels are gorgeous!
