My husband asked,”When it comes to Ridgid Heddle, what is your passion?.” After thinking long and hard I did find 2 passions I want to explore more with the rigid heddle. Here they are.

    1. I always consider color and texture in each project in relation to gradients. I am passionate to learn how to create outstanding gradients on the RH loom.

    2. Multi heddle weaving. I want to explore gradients and multi heddle.

Other areas to explore are dyeing and decorative trims.

Here is a scarf I designed. In the beginning I tried to use the Fibonacci Gradient with the 4 shaft weaves on 3 heddles. I learned a great deal. I knew 2 of my wefts were close in value but forgot to take into account the warp was also close in value. Next time…..use the 2 wefts but change the warp. I tried doubling yarns….liked the look. I tried alternating colors and also doing a 2 color 2 alternating color. I liked both. I did a point twill for most of the scarf but in certain areas added an alternating twill. I think I would stick with one or the other. Here is the result.

Lovely Cass! It reminds me of Fair Isle sweaters. A perfect autumn scarf for a chilly day!

Wow, your scarf is just beautiful, Cass. The colors are so rich looking. I like clicking on the images to get a close up view of the pattern. Amazing what can be done on a rigid heddle loom. I’m just barely at the beginning of my exploration with 2 heddles. Your work is just so encouraging about what is possible. Thanks for sharing this.

Charlene, I just started multi heddle weaving in June. I am also someone with learning difficulties so following directions is VERY difficult for me. Carly is amazing and is always there to answer questions and guide. If I can do it……everyone can do it. I swore last year I would never be a multi heddle weaver because I could not process the information. I proved myself wrong……..I started with 2 heddles so you are starting on this exciting journey in the best way possible.

Thank you! I do appreciate all comments! I like my design because of Tien’s session explaining how to accent areas of the weaving. Sooooo helpful!!!!! Today’s session is also excellent for rigid heddle weavers! We can do the same process horizontally in the weft. At this time it is hard to control where to put the color in the warp. I started using multiple heddles in June so rigid heddle weavers look at all of Carly’s fantastic videos and instructions.

Thanks for sharing this Cass, it is so wonderful to hear about the design process that other weavers use!

This is an excellent academy for me as a rigid heddle weaver! Great place to learn about colors and I love the twill generator PLUS Carly who puts everything together!

Kathy, one of the most exciting facets of this academy is that I am now weaving without having to think as much. What I am saying is that I was not exactly excited (putting it mildly) about this scarf. I thought it was going to be mamahuhu (horse- horse tiger-tiger) a phrase used in Mandarin Chinese to mean ‘so-so’. I stopped evaluating and took a deep breath and thought about all that I have learned in HA about color and design. I let that guide me and I started to see intuitively I was producing designs I like. Not until the wet finishing did I finally see the results of all I have learned in this academy. I will make this a topic at my Monday night rigid heddle interest group in Minneapolis. When I look back the progress is soooooo evident!
