Hi! Anyone here have thoughts on sett, materials, structures, dimensions, etc. for good dinner napkins, that might be possible on a rigid heddle loom?<div>

A family member has requested a set of dinner napkins, which I’ve never woven before. A lot of the rigid heddle napkin patterns I’m finding appear to be very similar to towels I’ve woven (e.g. 8/2 cotton, 12epi), just in more napkin-like dimensions. This has not only sent me down an existential path (‘what even makes a napkin a napkin?!?’), but also made me want to experiment with other less ‘just a different-shaped towel’ options.

I have access to RH reeds ranging from 8- to 15-dent, and am comfortable using multiple heddles and trying crazy-sounding things to see what happens, haha.

I usually make napkins from 20/2 cotton–less bulk. I don’t know how that transfers to a rigid heddle loom because I don’t have one. I think all the napkins have been twills (some fancy but the last set was just a 2/2 broken twill).

Thank you for your response! I was thinking less bulk than 8/2 would make sense. I think I’ll do some sampling with finer yarn and see what I can figure out.

My towels are generally 8/2 cotton doubled in a 10 dent heddle with a doubled weft. I like napkins to be a bit drapier than a towel, so I’ve been using the same setup for warp, but with a single weft. It’s not a huge difference, but I like the way they come out. If I make another set, I may try a double-density threading, still with a single weft. It’s something I’m just learning now, but I think it might be great for napkins.

Thanks for sharing! I’d love to hear how it turns out if you try the double-density threading. I may give it a try myself, too.
