Painted Warp/Plaited Twill
Posted by Holly Haynes on August 19, 2023 at 8:02 pmI put a painted 8/2 cotton warp on my 16 shaft loom this afternoon in a straight draw threading. I’m thinking about weaving a plaited twill (HW #12239) with a dark green or dark brown weft — maybe a trellis effect. I thought about a light purple weft but I don’t think there is enough value contrast. I didn’t think of the dark green until after I had the warp on the loom. Opinions welcome!

Well, sample, of course…..but I like the dark brown with those colors. And I often find that navy blue is a great color weft for multicolor warps.

What a lovely painted warp. I would agree with Joy on the dark brown for the weft. Just for fun, I took the colors of your warp to the color editor in handweaving.net for your chosen draft (12239) and sectioned them across the warp. I then trried the dark brown, light purple and Joy’s suggestion of navy in the weft. Because the color editor doesn’t provide for a variegated warp your project will have color changes not just across the warp but also down the length as well so most likely will have a very different look. Below are my draft examples. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing what you make.

WOW! thanks for your time and effort! The brown looks a little blah and the navy makes the colors pop more. I was just looking at my stash and found a really dark purple. I may go with that — it’s nearly the same value as the navy and I like weaving with purple! Thanks again, you really got me thinking.

Your welcome, Holly. I had fun with it. I think dark purple would be a good choice. I’m also a big fan of purple. Because your color changes in the warp are both across and down (my draft examples don’t account for this), I think sampling with your weft color would be best. Happy weaving.

I love seeing all the replies! Y’all know so much about color already. :-)
Holly – navy blue would probably preserve your colors well. It’s compatible with most of your colors (Two-Primary-Rule-wise) and the ones it isn’t compatible with, like the orange, are so much lighter in value that they will tend not to blend with it. (See Color Mixing I for an explanation of this, if you haven’t checked out the class already.)
It would be worth trying out other dark, dull colors, though – eggplant, forest green, and chocolate are my go-tos, but of course there are lots of possibilities. Dark and low-saturation is key.

I like the lighter purple (very summery look), the navy (bolder, more dramatic), and the idea of the dark purple weft (purple might bridge the look between the light purple and dark navy options). All of them keep the bright warp colors bright. The brown, though very effective as contrast, seems to dull down the mood of the otherwise bright colors.

How nice, Sample makes lots of samples. In the class I just did with Denise Kovant, she recommended several different colors as weft. I will never make this exact warp again nor will you, we can come close but try lots of colors so the next time you have a great feel for how they will work.
