Turned twill on 4 shafts?
Posted by Joy Hogg on May 23, 2023 at 11:36 amGot lots of help with placemat ideas on the design zoom. Nothing like all that experience in the “room”! A suggestion for sturdy placemats was twill, a o g other suggestions. I forgot to ask – can you do turned twill on a 4 shaft loom? Marguerite Davidson, page 31, has a draft but I can’t see that it goes from 1/2 to 2/1.Can you peek at that one and see if the diagonals show ? I know I can’t get 1/3 and 3/1 on 4 shafts.

If you mean twill blocks, then no, you can’t do 1:3-3:1. But you can do it in weft wise stripes. It means using a direct tie up and two feet to do the 3 up ratio. Not sure I have a draft, I can rummage and see.

You can even, using this technique, make a ‘shaded’ twill. I have a draft but it’s not in .wif. brb.

Making a turned twill out of 1/2 and 2/1 twill (as opposed to 1/3 and 3/1, as we usually see) requires six shafts: three for each block.
